Lanercost Priory
How to find us
By public transport

Until this year, during the summer, there has been a regular bus service along Hadrian's Wall - route AD122 Hadrian's Wall Bus. The buses have stopped right outside the Priory.

The subsidy for the Cumbrian end of the service has been withdrawn by Cumbria County Council and so, unfortunately, there is no current public transport provision - we hope that this situation will be rectified.

On foot

If you are 'walking the Wall' it is definitely worth a short detour down to the Priory.

If you leave the line of the wall at Hayton Gate (OS grid ref NY554645) there is lane straight down the hill to Priory corner. You will see the Priory clearly from the line of the wall and as you walk down the lane.

By Road

The Priory is well sign-posted and very easy to find, look for the brown and white direction signs.

From the west

From the M6 take exit J43 onto the A69 east and follow the signs for Lanercost Priory.

Six miles from the motorway you will cross a roundabout and enter Brampton, turn right at the T-junction and fork left as you leave Brampton. As you descend the hill towards the River Irthing and Lanercost you will get a view of the Priory.

As you cross the river have a quick look at the old bridge on the left. In a few hundred yards turn right under the archway (unless you are driving a coach).

From the east

From Newcastle or the east take the A69 towards Carlisle and again follow the signs for Lanercost Priory.

A little way before Brampton the road runs through woodland, turn right down towards Naworth Castle - enjoy the stunning views across the border to Scotland as you come down the drive to the castle. The road turns left just before the castle and descends down into the valley.

Turn right onto the Brampton to Lanercost road when you get down to the T-junction. In a few hundred yards turn right under the archway (unless you are driving a coach).
